The Diverse Books Tag

Many thanks to Naz from Read Diverse Books for creating this tag. This is the first one that I've taken part in, by the way - so here we go!

I decided to include a majority of books that I have read and would recommend, in the attempt to keep my TBR pile to a minimum and increase yours with the best books I've read (cue evil laugh).

Find a Book Starring a Lesbian Character

The Telling by Ursula K. LeGuin - One of my favorite books from LeGuin's Hamish Cycle (which is infinitely better than her Earthsea Series; I'll fight you on this), which incidentally has a lesbian, POC main character.

Find a Book with a Muslim Protagonist

I Am Istanbul/Istanbullu by Buket Uzuner, translated by Kenneth J. Dakan - I adored this book from the female Turkish author, which takes place entirely within Istanbul's Ataturk airport. Read my review here.

Find a Book Set in Latin America

A Planet for Rent by Yoss, translated by David Frye - Amazing Cuban speculative fiction. See my review here.

Find a Book About a Person with a Disability

The Circle of Karma by Kunzang Choden - Tsomo is a poor Bhutanese woman who travels through northern India looking for work. For many years, she struggles with a debilitating deformity: a growth in her womb that makes her appear 8 months pregnant, with all of the problems associated with that. This book does a wonderful job of showing Tsomo's predicament and her resilience in the face of this disease. Read my review here.

Find a Science-Fiction or Fantasy Book with a POC Protagonist

The Devourers by Indra Das - This book is hands-down my favorite book that I stumbled upon while keeping this blog. And it will come out on July 12, 2016 in the US! I need more people to read it so I can geek out with other people, instead of just by myself in my room. Read my review here.

Find a Book Set In or About Any Country in Africa

Sin is a Puppy that Follows You Home by Balaraba Ramat Yukubu - The first full-length novel translated from Hausa to English and published by one of my favorite Indian publishers, this short book is a soap opera in printed form. Read my review here.

Find a Book Written by an Indigenous or Native Author

Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection, edited by Hope Nicholson - A beautiful collection of graphic stories by Native North Americans. Also the cover is amazing. Read my review here.

Find a Book Set in South Asia

The King's Harvest by Chetan Raj Shreshta - Two beautifully written novellas that bring the little-known, former Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim to life. I bought this when I visited Sikkim, and I loved the memories of the trip that this book evoked. Read my review here.

Find a Book With a Biracial Protagonist

Blackass by A. Igoni Barrett - This is kind of cheating, because Furo isn't technically biracial: through a strange, Kafkaesque transformation he ends up becoming a different race. Yep, one day he wakes up and instead of being a cockroach he's suddenly white. There's a great sense of the absurd and some wonderful satire about postcolonial societies, too. Review coming soon.

Find a Book Starring a Transgender Character or About Transgender Issues

Pantomime by Laura Lam - Not one that I've read, but from the reviews it's a YA fantasy novel about an intersex individual who begins to get magical powers and then joins the circus! Sounds like something I would like. By the way, I found the recommendation on this reddit thread

That was fun! I highly recommend all of these novels (the ones I have read, at least), and I'd love to discuss them with other readers. What have you got?

Since I'm supposed to tag 5 people, I think I'll go with a few from the IFFP Shadow Panel last year. That would be:

Joe from roughghosts

Emma from Words and Peace

Bellezza from Dolce Bellezza

Grant from 1streading's Blog

  1. Are you back in India? I hope your trip to the U.S.went well.

    Thanks for doing the tag.
You have officially gotten me excited for The Devourers.😃

I've seen Blackass before and it looks so strange and interesting!

Also, I wasn't a big fan of the Earthsea series (well, I only read the first one), but am still open to reading more if Le Guin's work, especially if it had a lesbian MC!

    1. Yes I am back. And you must read The Devourers because I NEED someone to talk to about it. :D

As for Earthsea, I'm gradually making my way through the series. I discovered that I really dislike the main character, I think - the short stories that are in the same world were OK. But LeGuin's Hamish cycle is AMAZING. Especially this one, The Left Hand of Darkness, and The Dispossessed. I almost listed The Left Hand of Darkness for the one with Transgender themes, but then I thought I should probably widen my scope of authors. :P
